Recently, a new type of hotel room, known as 'handicap rooms', has been introduced in Korea, designed to be accessible for those with mobility challenges such as the disabled, elderly, pregnant women, and families with young children. These rooms are barrier-free (without thresholds), featuring accessible designs including wider doorways, lower switches, and emergency buttons. Despite their benefits, awareness about these rooms is low, and few accommodations actively promote them. Some Korean hotels are voluntarily adopting these designs, yet some discrepancies in standards and service quality remain. In comparison, countries like the USA and Japan have mandatory standards for accessibility in hotels, with more inclusive approaches for everyone. There’s a growing need for both physical and social awareness improvements in Korea to create truly accessible travel for all.
