On May 6th, Park Soo-geun, a prominent figure in Korean modern art, passed away at the age of 51. Despite challenges in his life, he captured the Korean essence and ordinary lives of common people through his unique art style, earning the title 'national artist.' Born in 1914 in a poor farming family in Gangwon Province, Park pursued art after being inspired by Millet's 'The Angelus' at the age of 12. Largely self-taught, he succeeded in entering the art world with his watercolor 'Spring is Coming' at the age of 18. During the Korean War, Park survived by painting portraits for U.S. soldiers. His distinctive style reflects the lives of ordinary people, depicting simple everyday scenes with granite-like textures. Despite gaining recognition as an artist, he faced financial struggles which affected his health. Park's works like 'Laundry Place,' 'Tree and Two Women,' and 'Girl with Baby' continue to resonate deeply with the public.
