Buddha Statue Survives Fire at Temple in South Korea

In Uiseong's Goun Temple in South Korea, a severe wildfire destroyed much of the surrounding nature and temple buildings; however, the sacred Daeungbojeon Hall and its Buddha statue miraculously remained unharmed. Despite strenuous efforts, the heavy Buddha statue could not be relocated and had to be protected with a fire-retardant cover. Remarkably, while 21 out of 30 temple halls were burnt down, key structures such as the Daeungbojeon and Myeongbujeon Halls survived the blaze. To support local victims affected by the fire, the temple plans to organize a fundraising event for Buddha's Birthday. Meanwhile, nearby cultural sites, including Manhyujeong Pavilion, also narrowly escaped severe damage. This shows a fascinating interplay between cultural heritage and natural disaster resilience in Korea.
