Korea to Expand Animal Biosafety Level 3 Facility for Primate Research

South Korea's Bioinformatics Research Institute has begun construction of an expanded Animal Biosafety Level 3 (ABL3) facility dedicated to primate research. This new infrastructure will accelerate the development of vaccines and treatments for infectious diseases, an essential step in preparing for future pandemics. Set to be completed by mid-2026, the extension will play a pivotal role in reducing the development time for vaccines by supporting preclinical trials. The use of primates, due to their physiological similarity to humans, is crucial for evaluating the effectiveness of vaccine and treatment candidates in high-security environments capable of handling dangerous pathogens.
