Recent wildfires in the Gangwon and Gyeongbuk/Gyeongnam regions of South Korea have severely impacted local economies that rely heavily on tourism. After past wildfires in 2019, tourism dropped significantly, leading to long-term economic hardship for these areas. Visits to affected regions like Andong and Yeongdeok have decreased, leading to a decline in local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and traditional craft markets.
The South Korean government is encouraging tourism to help recovery through campaigns and incentives. However, restoring the local economy is not enough; it requires supporting displaced residents and rebuilding their lives. The combined efforts of tourism and recovery are necessary for full healing, highlighting that showing support and interest is more beneficial than avoiding these destinations.
