Korean makgeolli producers like Guksundang and Jipyeong are expanding into international markets due to a shrinking domestic market. While still lagging behind other traditional drinks like Japanese sake, these companies aim to capitalize on the global K-food trend. Jipyeong, for instance, is making its way into the Canadian market. They've developed 'sterilized makgeolli' with a one-year shelf life, addressing the short shelf life of traditional makgeolli. Companies are increasing their focus on exports, as the makgeolli market in Korea is declining, driven by diverse alcohol preferences like whiskey and highballs. The rising global interest in K-food is helping to lift exports, with makgeolli targeted to reach 20 international markets by the end of the year. The efforts are expected to bolster makgeolli’s global competitive edge and contribute to the globalization of Korean traditional alcohol.
