JD Choi, a Korean-Canadian artist, has made history as the first Korean to be shortlisted for the prestigious Turner Prize. Born in Canada and influenced by her Korean mother's heritage, Choi's art is inspired by traditional Korean culture and folklore, including mythical figures like Magohalmi, Princess Bari, and Jeju Haenyeo (female divers from Jeju Island). Her nominated work is a collaborative installation that was featured in the 2025 Sharjah Biennale and demonstrates a rich intertwining of Korean shamanistic elements and contemporary art. The announcement of her nomination left Choi expressing gratitude and humility. The Turner Prize, named after the British artist J.M.W. Turner, has been awarded since 1984, recognizing exceptional talent in modern art within the UK. The winner will be announced in December.
