JD Choi, a 42-year-old Korean-Canadian artist, has been nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize, the UK's top art award. The Tate Museum announced that JD Choi is among four finalists, alongside Scottish artist Nnenna Kalu, Iraqi artist Mohammed Sami, and British artist Renee Matić. Raised in Canada, JD Choi is known for incorporating Korean folklore like "gumiho" (a mythical nine-tailed fox) and feminist perspectives in her paintings. Her work was featured in the Jeju Biennale 2022 and she held her first solo exhibition at Space K Seoul in 2023. The nominees' artworks will be exhibited at the Cartwright Hall from September 27 to February 22, and the winner will be announced on December 9 with a prize of £25,000 ($47,000).
