Diego Velázquez's painting 'The Rokeby Venus' is the only surviving nude created by Velázquez, painted during his stay in Italy from 1647-1651. While Renaissance artists depicted Venus with golden locks and luxurious surroundings, Velázquez chose a more realistic representation. His Venus, with dark hair, is shown from behind, lacking any jewelry or ornamentation, emphasizing the beauty seen in her reflection. The focus on eye contact through a mirror allows viewers to see beauty as a connection rather than physical features. Once privately owned, the painting was saved for public exhibition in the National Gallery thanks to public fundraising.
