The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in South Korea is holding an exhibition titled 'Surrealism and Korean Modern Art' from April 17 to July 6. This exhibition seeks to rediscover and showcase artists who explored surrealism in Korean modern art, which had been overlooked in 20th-century Korean art history. The exhibition features six artists—Kim Wook-gyu, Kim Jong-nam, Kim Jong-ha, Shin Young-heon, Kim Young-hwan, and Park Kwang-ho—whose surrealist works persisted despite the challenges of colonization, war, and division in Korea. The exhibition is divided into two parts: the first part highlights the origins and development of surrealism in Korea, while the second part focuses on the featured artists' works. An academic symposium on surrealism will also take place during the exhibition period.
