The traditional Korean story of 'Simcheong,' often labeled as a tale of filial piety, is being reinterpreted as a narrative about the sacrifice of women in patriarchal societies. The National Theater of Korea and Jeonju International Sori Festival are collaboratively producing a new opera adaptation of 'Simcheong,' aiming for its global stage debut. This version explores themes of societal oppression and transcends traditional genres by combining elements of pansori (a type of traditional Korean music storytelling) with opera. The production, directed by renowned director Yonah Kim, opens in August at the Jeonju Sori Arts Center and in September at the National Theater of Korea. With a cast of over 130 performers, it is both a creative and international outreach effort.
