To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the Seoul Metropolitan Opera Company is presenting 'Faust' at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul. Originally based on Goethe’s play, this opera by French composer Charles Gounod involves the tragic love story of Faust, who regains his youth by making a pact with the devil, Mephistopheles, and young Marguerite. Uniquely, this production integrates theatrical elements into the opera, termed 'Oplay', aiming for immersive enjoyment, especially for newcomers to opera. Veteran actor Jung Dong-Hwan, known in theater, takes on the role of elderly Faust using spoken Korean dialogue. The performance runs until November 13, featuring notable arias and starring tenors Kim Hyo-jong, Park Seung-joo, sopranos Son Ji-hye, Hwang Soo-mi, and bass-baritones Samuel Youn and Jeon Tae-hyun.
