A South Korean court has sentenced a businessman to four years in prison and fined him 30 million KRW for selling fake Korean gochugaru (chili powder) made from unauthorized Chinese ingredients, falsely labeled as '100% dried peppers'. The court also ordered him to forfeit approximately 7.9 billion KRW in profits made from selling about 557 tons of this fake product. Despite being caught and ordered to dispose of the counterfeit peppers, the businessman continued the deceit by retrieving the ingredients under false pretenses. This case highlights significant violations of food safety laws and breaches of consumer trust in South Korea.
