The Korea Tourism Organization has collaborated with the Biyang-ri Village Association to restore the habitat of the endangered flower Hwanggeun on Biyangdo Island, celebrating Arbor Day. Hwanggeun, a native hibiscus of Jeju, was once classified as a level-II endangered wild species. Through 20 years of collaborative conservation efforts, it has been successfully restored. This flower is noted for its capacity to absorb carbon up to 3-5 times more than terrestrial forests, making it an important "carbon sink". More than 150 participants helped plant 120 Hwanggeun plants and conducted clean-up activities on Biyangdo, which struggles with marine debris due to its lack of waste processing facilities. The Korea Tourism Organization aims to develop sustainable marine tourism content using Jeju's unique ecological environment. In February, an agreement for discovering and promoting Jeju's marine tourism content by 2025 was also established with the Biyang-ri Village Association.
