This pain reduction effect was observed only in female mice, suggesting potential new treatments for chronic pain disorders in women. The research, published in 'Science,' indicates that these immune cells can directly stimulate pain receptors in the nervous system, with the involvement of female hormones like estrogen in activating this function. This discovery highlights a mechanism where regulatory T-cells play a doctoral role, unlike their more warrior-like known activities in fighting infections.
