Turfan, a city located to the south of the Tianshan Mountains and northeast of the Taklamakan Desert, was historically known as the capital of the ancient Silk Road oasis state 'Gaochang Kingdom.' Known as the "City of Fire" due to high temperatures exceeding 40°C even in the late afternoon, Turfan has preserved various historical sites such as Gaochang Ancient City, Karez underground canals, and the Bezeklik Caves. The region is mostly inhabited by the Uyghur ethnic group, who represent 70% of the population. Significant portions of Turfan's land are used for grape cultivation, particularly the production of seedless raisins, famous worldwide. The historical significance of Turfan includes its role as a key location on the Silk Road for the spread of Buddhism along dangerous routes like the Taklamakan Desert and the Pamirs. Turfan's historic infrastructure, including earth-brick buildings and ancient Buddhist stupas, reflects the diverse and rich cultural history that has influenced the region over centuries, manifesting in its architecture and demographic mix. Present-day Turfan showcases both a modern city with advanced urban planning and remnants of a bygone era.
