Contemporary Painting Exhibition 'Destruction and Creation' at West Sea Museum (Aug 8–30)

The West Sea Museum in Seosan hosts a group exhibition, 'Contemporary Painting: Destruction and Creation,' from Aug 8 to 30, featuring nine painters — including director Jeong Tae-gung, Go Seong-hee, Park Sam-chil, and others. The show explores how acts of destruction and creation open new artistic possibilities in contemporary art. Works center on painting but incorporate diverse materials and techniques such as glass, dojo (ceramic/earthenware techniques), ottchil (Korean lacquer), woodblock, and mixed media, allowing visitors to see how traditional materials and forms are pushed into new expressions. On Aug 12 at 1 PM, poet and emeritus professor Lee Kyung-gyo will give a special lecture, 'Modernity, Destruction and Creation,' discussing how creative change often begins at the margins and how the local history and place-name (jiyong) of Chang-ri inform the exhibition’s themes. Curator Jeong hopes the exhibition and talk will prompt reflection on center vs. periphery, tradition vs. innovation, and how new art emerges between such contrasts.
