Why Some Hairbrushes Cost Over $100: The Case for Wild Boar Bristles

In Korea, cheap plastic brushes cost only a few dollars while some premium brushes exceed 100,000 won (~$80–120) because of materials and construction—most notably natural wild boar bristles. Boar bristles contain keratin and help distribute natural scalp oils along the hair shaft, smoothing the cuticle (hair’s outer layer) for shinier, less frizzy hair. They also don’t heat up like metal bristles when used with a hairdryer, reducing heat damage, and their dense arrangement gives good grip for styling. However, experts stress that an expensive brush won’t automatically improve hair; choosing the right brush for hair condition and wet or dry use matters more. Use softer, flexible bristles on wet or fine hair to prevent breakage; wider paddle brushes work well on dry hair to detangle large sections. For curly hair, flexible bristles with rounded tips used when hair is slightly damp help preserve curls and reduce frizz. High-end boar-bristle brushes can last long with care, but price alone shouldn’t determine the best choice—match brush type to hair texture and use instead.
