‘Master of Light’ Joaquín Sorolla Comes to Seoul in Major Spanish Art Show

A major exhibition, “500 Years of Spanish Art: A Chronicle of Light and Darkness,” opens in Seoul on the 22nd at the Hangaram Art Museum, featuring 95 works by Spanish masters including Joaquín Sorolla, Francisco Goya, Diego Velázquez, and El Greco. Highlighting Sorolla—lauded by Monet as the “master of light”—is his 1914 portrait of Manuel Pérez de Guzmán y Bosal (the Duke of Jerez de los Caballeros), part of the Hispanic Society of America (HSA) collection that helped build the museum’s holdings. The show traces 500 years of Spanish art and includes Sorolla’s sunlit Valencian beach scenes and lesser-known portraits, reflecting his ties with collector Archer M. Huntington and the HSA. Early-bird “last early bird” tickets are on sale through the 17th at about 35% off (adult price reduced from 23,000 won to 15,000 won); the exhibition runs until January 20, with early-bird visits valid through November 29.
