British artist Ed Atkins opened his first solo exhibition in Korea, "One Day in Space," at Gladstone Seoul in Hannam-dong. The show centers on a new time-lapse video, Passive Mech, made from over 40,000 photographs taken at one-minute intervals from his daughter's window. A cardboard stage outside his summer house slowly collapses across changing seasons, evoking cycles of growth, decay and memory. Atkins also presents frottage (rubbing) works made from bedsheets, assemblages of family objects like cereal boxes and animal flash cards, and varied photo prints that contrast homemade textures with museum display. He describes the project as an essay on time and the shifting technologies of image-making, arguing that photographs make emotions re-experiencable and render memory tactile. The exhibition runs through October 31.
