CJ Olive Young said foreign shoppers’ cumulative in-store purchases in Korea surpassed 1 trillion won by August, three months earlier than last year. Foreign transactions reached 11.01 million, and foreigners now account for 33% of offline sales (up from 2% in 2022). Buyers came from 192 countries, led by the U.S., Singapore, Japan, China and Thailand. Non-capital regions saw especially strong growth—Gangwon (+105%), Gyeongju (+88%), Daejeon (+80%), and Jeonju (+62%)—attributed to Olive Young’s expansion of large and regionally tailored stores that attract tourists. Purchased items are diversifying from basic skincare to hair care and inner beauty products. (Olive Young is a popular Korean health and beauty retail chain.)
