Hyundai Replaces Hydrogen Chief with Energy Veteran from BP, Signaling Shift from Mobility to Energy

Hyundai Motor Group has appointed Eunhee Hong, a veteran from British oil and energy company BP, as head of HMG Energy & Hydrogen, replacing former mobility-focused leader Ken Ramirez. The move signals a strategic shift from treating hydrogen primarily as a vehicle fuel to building a wider hydrogen energy ecosystem and value chain. Hong’s background in upstream (exploration/production) and downstream (refining/sales) operations at BP positions her to expand Hyundai’s hydrogen efforts into production, regional ‘produce-and-consume’ hubs (지산지소), and international projects such as HTWO Guangzhou, HTWO Energy Cheongju, and green hydrogen demonstrations in Hong Kong and at Korea’s Antarctic research station. Hyundai aims to raise domestic hydrogen output from 500 kg/day to 2 tons/day by 2030 and accelerate global commercialization, leveraging Hong’s experience working with government regulators to navigate complex local rules.
