On Sunday the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Choi Hwi-young guided 11 members of France’s Federation Francaise de la Randonnee on a hike up Bukhansan National Park near Seoul to showcase the appeal of “K-mountains.” Choi highlighted that Korean mountains combine nature, history and culture—pointing out sites like the Joseon-era Bukhansanseong (Bukhansan Fortress) and the thousand-year-old Buddhist temple Hwagyesa—while encouraging the visitors to share Korea’s trails with French trekkers. The group inspected barrier-free (accessible) trail facilities and were even offered cucumbers (“K-cucumber”)—a traditional Korean snack hikers bring to refresh themselves on the trail. The visit, organized with Korea Tourism Organization support, is part of a larger program in which about 40 French walkers will explore Korean walking and mountain destinations including Andong Hahoe Village, Gyeongju, Busan’s Geumjeongsan, Suncheon Bay, and Jirisan with a temple stay at Hwaeomsa.
