Oscar Wilde's Salome Reimagined as Korean Changgeuk in Daegu

A Korean-style changgeuk (traditional Korean opera) adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s play Salome will be staged at Eoul Art Center Hamji Hall in Daegu on September 9. The production, selected for the 2026 Regional Performing Arts Distribution Support Program, premiered in 2023 and was recognized as a notable new work. It combines themes of obsession and madness with powerful our-sori (traditional Korean vocal techniques) and a grotesque aesthetic that departs from conventional changgeuk. Notable cast members include Choi Ye-rim as Salome, Yu Tae-pyung as Herod, and Jeong Eun-hye contributing both composition and performance. Live musicians and returning creative team members—writer Ko Seon-woong, director Kim Si-hwa, and designer Lee Sang-bong for costumes—complete the production’s immersive staging.
