Hyundai Accelerates Humanoid Robot Mass Production amid Chinese Investment Push

Global automakers are shifting from electric vehicles to humanoid robots. Chinese firms XPeng (샤오펑) and BYD are rapidly scaling robotics: XPeng’s robotics unit raised $900 million in its first external funding to develop the IRON humanoid (휴머노이드) and build production capacity, while BYD has formed a dedicated team to create embedded-AI products and its own humanoid platform. Hyundai Motor Group is also speeding commercialization through Boston Dynamics’ Atlas robot, expanding its U.S. meta-plant testing center and planning to deploy Atlas in its HMGMA production lines by 2028. The company aims to become a “physical AI” (피지컬 AI) firm, leveraging auto industry strengths—batteries, motors, sensors, AI, mass-production and sales/finance channels—to compete against heavily capitalized Chinese rivals. The market remains early-stage, so technology maturity, cost competitiveness, and production speed will determine future leadership.
