“Carpe Diem” on Stage: Cha In-pyo Leads Korean Production of Dead Poets Society

The classic film Dead Poets Society has been adapted into Korea’s first licensed stage production, running at NOL Theater Daehangno until Sept 13. Cha In-pyo, making his theater debut after 33 years, plays John Keating with a restrained, teacher-focused interpretation that emphasizes conviction over imitation of Robin Williams’s film mannerisms. The 1959 New England boarding school setting and Tom Schulman’s original screenplay-turned-play resonate with contemporary Korean education issues—strict institutions, parental pressure, and limited student autonomy.
