‘Till We Have Faces’: Two-Decade Bond Between Eddie Kang and Naoki Koide

Seoul’s Gana Art Namsan hosts a two-person exhibition, ‘Till We Have Faces,’ featuring Korean painter Eddie Kang (46) and Japanese artist Naoki Koide (58) through October 11. Drawing its title from C.S. Lewis’s novel, the show explores the search for authentic selfhood and the protective figures people create to cope with fear and loss. Koide sculpts uncanny, hybrid spirits and animals in ceramics—work shaped by the unpredictability of kiln firing and personal grief, including references to koma-inu (traditional guardian lion-dog). Kang presents a new ‘Props’ series of painted characters—such as Yeti, Rag, and his late dog Loveless—who act as comforting alter-egos formed during childhood anxieties and life transitions. The exhibition also includes collaborative pieces where Koide’s clay guardians and Kang’s painted protectors meet physically, asking what faces we adopt to guard ourselves and who we become in the process.
