Choi Won-jeong Solo Exhibition 'V370A: Beyond Deep Time' Explores Migration and Identity

Choi Won-jeong’s solo exhibition “V370A: Beyond Deep Time” runs from July 14 to September 3 at Amado Art Space in Hannam-dong, Seoul. The show interweaves bones and fossils, a genetic family tree, old maps and urban graffiti to trace migration and evolving identity. A basement corridor features a branching root installation, a genetic family tree that links early humans on one side with the artist and her daughter on the other. Roots II stems from Choi’s 2017 DNA test, which traced ancestors leaving Africa about 65,000 years ago and reaching Northeast Asia near the Heilongjiang region around 10,000 years ago. Works include 3D-printed figures imagined as primordial parents, pieces that combine Ice Age migration, sewing techniques and digital prints, and portraits of the artist and daughter made from dental X-rays embroidered with migration routes and the Bering Land Bridge contour lines. The title V370A refers to a variant gene associated with shovel-shaped incisors and dense hair, used by the artist as a clue to migration, environmental adaptation and maternal lineage. On the ground floor a 15th-century world map (혼일강리역대국도지도) is stitched over the daughter’s dental X-ray to highlight how historical worldviews overlap with present identities. The exhibition presents identity as an ever-forming process rather than a fixed state.
