Two immigrant founders shaped Champagne’s most famous houses. In the 1830s German Wilhelm Deutz (later naturalized as Guillaume Deutz) and Swiss Henri-Marc de Brennus crossed into the Champagne region, built prestigious houses (Deutz and de Brégnac/de Brnojuge), and turned sparkling wine into a global luxury product. Deutz focused on consistent high-quality grand cru vineyards, surviving riots and war by contracting with local growers and even changing names to prove French loyalty. De Brégnouge innovated with the world’s first illustrated wine label and the enduring “Cordon Bleu” brand, quickly expanding across Europe and the Atlantic. Both founders kept ties to their origins while becoming guardians of Champagne’s reputation—evidence that Champagne was from the start a cross‑border story.
