If He Had Never Left, Would He Have Known That Home? — Do Ho Suh’s 'Hoihyang'

Renowned artist Do Ho Suh explores memory, displacement and home in his Seoul exhibition 'Hoihyang' (回向). Drawing on the hanok (traditional Korean house) his parents built, Suh recreates rooms, corridors, doors and fixtures using thin, translucent fabric so the structures become light, foldable and portable. His installations—like a hanok perched atop a London footbridge—evoke a Proustian return: physical space moved across borders carries time and presence with it. Suh’s fabric homes lack market value or square footage; they preserve traces of people and lived moments, making personal nostalgia feel universal. The show reflects how distance can create clarity: leaving reveals what shaped us, and art can rebuild vanished spaces and summon lost time and people.
