Chinese Ambassador Visits Gwangju, Expresses Regret Over Renaming of Taiwan Pavilion

China’s ambassador to South Korea, Dai Bing, visited Gwangju on the 27th and met Mayor Min Hyung-bae. During the visit he reportedly expressed regret and concern after the Gwangju Biennale approved changing the name of the Taiwan pavilion from the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA) to simply the "Taiwan Pavilion." Mayor Min replied that political decisions should not influence artistic spaces. The Biennale foundation said it reviewed a request from NTMoFA and approved the name as "Taiwan Pavilion." The Biennale’s pavilion project, running since 2018, includes 16 national pavilions and 11 institutional participants this year, with NTMoFA among them. The Taiwan Ministry of Culture had previously raised objections, saying organizers had suddenly switched the agreed name to NTMoFA in June.
