Memorial Ceremony for Comfort Women Held at Hwangryeonsa Temple on the 30th

The Minjok Aesthetics Institute announced a memorial ritual and reconciliation festival for Japanese military 'comfort women' at Hwangryeonsa (a Buddhist temple) in Suyeong District, Busan on the 30th. The event continues a tradition that began in May 1993 at Haeundae Beach and was later renamed the "Japanese Military 'Comfort Women' Reconciliation Festival." A morning chondoje (Buddhist rite to console spirits) will be followed at 2 PM by traditional performances including creative mask-dance troupes Jigi Geumji and Suju Talchum, Buddhist-inspired dances, and songs. Marking 81 years since liberation, this year’s program will also honor women independence fighters who resisted Japanese rule, venerating them as 지모신 (jimosin, the earth mother deity) in modern historical memory.
