Pansori Star Park Ae-ri Joins Gangwon Tour with 'Black Injeolmi'

Renowned pansori singer Park Ae-ri will perform as Lee Seong-rye in 'Black Injeolmi,' a modern 'uri sori-geuk' (Korean sound-drama combining pansori, folk song, traditional performance, and contemporary theater). Based on the 1839 persecution and the real story of Choi Yang-up’s parents, the Gangwon Provincial Theater’s production begins touring Gangwon Province on the 28th, opening at Gangneung Art Center. Park, who has spent over 40 years popularizing pansori, says the piece brings traditional vocal techniques into everyday emotional storytelling and that actors trained for four months in traditional singing, rhythms, and expression. Though the play has religious background, Park emphasizes portraying Lee Seong-rye foremost as a mother who endured a painful era. She hopes the performances across Gangneung, Sokcho, Cheorwon, Wonju, and Chuncheon will move local audiences to laugh, cry, and find catharsis.
