Gyeongju's Summer Bloom: Sunflowers and Purple Carpets at the Ancient Capital

Gyeongju, the ‘millennium capital’ in North Gyeongsang Province, is drawing summer visitors with vibrant flower displays around historic sites. Sunflowers blanket the area around Cheomseongdae (an ancient astronomical observatory), creating a striking scene as they face the sun; at dusk the blooms and the stone observatory offer a tranquil summer-night atmosphere. Other summer highlights include crape myrtle (baerong tree) that blooms for about 100 days, purple Liriope (maekmundong) carpeting Gyerim (a legendary forest tied to the founding myth of Kim Al-ji) and Hwangseong Park’s pine groves, and traditional garden views at Jongojeong pavilion in Songgok village. Seochulji pond—famous for a legend about a crow and a mouse—adds cultural depth. Practical notes: KTX services via Gyeongju Station will increase from Sept. 1, the National Gyeongju Museum parking becomes paid from Sept. 1, and flower-field entry is free though parking at historic sites may charge. Local treats include ten-won bread, Hwangnam bread, barley rice cakes, and Gyeongju-themed cookies named a top souvenir.
