Hwaseong Taegiwang Legend Revived as Contemporary Dance

Dance Company Til brings the Hwaseong (횡성) tale of Taegiwang to life with a new work, “Delete Failed – The Unvanished Story,” performed on June 28–29 at Hwaseong Cultural Center. Based on the local oral epic “Taegiyusa,” the three-part omnibus reimagines the final king Taegi (태기왕) of Jinhan—who built a fortress on Taegi Mountain and lost to Park Hyeokgeose of Silla—not just through royal rise and fall but through the lives, fears, and hopes of the common people forced into the mountain. Choreographers Igoeun, Kim Beomsoo, and Jeong Daeun present distinct pieces: memory resurrected from historical ruptures; unseen presences that linger; and movement patterns that expand through repetition and variation. The performance is site-responsive and mobile: audience members move through the lobby, seats, and stage, experiencing varied distances and viewpoints. Audience participation is built in—early in the show spectators help dress dancers, initiating the performers’ movements and the unfolding narrative.
