Two Generations of Korean Painting: Park Seo-bo and Kim Se-eun at Kukje Gallery

Kukje Gallery, ahead of the Frieze Seoul art fair, presents side-by-side exhibitions of late modernist master Park Seo-bo (1931–2023) and contemporary painter Kim Se-eun (b. 1989). Park’s retrospective “Changing and Unchanging” traces fifty years of his signature myobeop (묘법) technique, from early pencil rhythms on canvas to hanji (한지, traditional Korean paper) works, later monochrome graphite reliefs inspired by the soot of his mother’s stove, color-infused ‘color myobeop’ works described as ‘healing colors,’ and finally newspaper-based pieces that leave personal marks over recorded events. Kim’s solo “Pitwall and Picto” explores how urban information and mobility shape bodily perception. “Pitwall” refers to motorsport communication spaces and “Picto” to pictograms; together she visualizes how individuals sense and judge within fluid city environments. Key works include “Oksu,” based on a photo of Oksu Station that ties urban redevelopment to childhood memories in Bundang, and the “Tunnelization” series examining limited forward-only movement and spatial perception. Both shows run through Oct. 18.
