Kimbop Steals the Show at US Open: $28 Bulgogi Roll Draws Attention

A Korean-style kimbap (rice roll) featuring seasoned bulgogi, carrots, pickled radish, kale and burdock is being sold for $28 at the US Open tennis food courts in Flushing, Queens. The vendor, Korean-American restaurateur Simon Kim of the KIMBOP brand, told media the dish evokes childhood memories—his mother often packed kimbap for school sports days (undonghoe). Kim, a 1.5-generation immigrant who moved to the U.S. at 13, previously gained recognition on the TV show “Crazy Rich Korean” and founded COQODAQ, a fried-chicken shop known for caviar-topped chicken nuggets. American food influencer Sam Goldberg also showcased the roll on social media, helping spark interest in the upscale kimbap at the event running from Aug. 30 to Sept. 13.
