Children’s Family Musical “I Am a Firefly” Stars Min Chaewon in Dual Roles

The original children’s family musical I Am a Firefly, based on a picture book inspired by musician Jung Joong-sik’s song, opens Sept 9–Oct 5 at Yerimdang Art Hall in Seoul. The story follows a child who overcomes fear of the dark after bonding with a small firefly, blending emotional storytelling and music. Veteran actress Min Chaewon will play two contrasting roles—the warm storyteller grandmother and the troubled villain “Meokbam” (먹밤, a character name meaning “eating chestnut” or a spooky figure in the show)—bringing strong presence and distinct characterization to each part. Min says she was drawn to the original song and the script’s deeper messages, and hopes the musical will encourage real human empathy in an AI-driven era. She also notes the show speaks to adults, reminding them of the child within. The production is presented by News1 with creative team including director Bae Seok-jun, composer Park Shin-ae, and playwright Lee Hwan; the cast features several other performers. Min hopes for sold-out performances and that the musical’s warm message resonates with many.
