Korean Novels Reimagined for Stage with Genre-Tailored Productions

This fall, Korean theatres are increasingly adapting novels into plays and musicals that emphasize the source works’ genre traits rather than simply retelling plots. Directors reshape core elements—setting, time, tone—into theatrical languages like minimalist staged readings, immersive AV, and musical staging. Examples include a reading-style adaptation of Han Kang’s novel (Han Kang: acclaimed novelist) staged with two actors; a tech-forward SF piece based on Kim Choyeop’s story using AI video and spatial sound to render space stations and time spans; and multiple works by Chun Seon-ran (Chun Seon-ran: SF author) adapted into restrained drama and a dystopian musical. Other adaptations range from a watery, climate-disaster musical set in 2057 Seoul to a family musical of Lee Hyun’s bestselling children’s book ‘Blue Lion Wanini’ using large ensemble dance and dynamic sets. Critics say these productions actively reconfigure texts to fit theatrical constraints, using each genre’s strengths to explore new staging techniques rather than relying solely on the novels’ popularity.
