Young Korean Pianist Kim Sehyun to Release Debut Album After Long-Thibaud Win

Seventeen-year-old pianist Kim Sehyun, who won the prestigious Long-Thibaud International Competition in France last year, will release his debut album next month featuring works by Gabriel Fauré and Frédéric Chopin. Kim said he now focuses on letting music “breathe” rather than playing as fast as in competitions, and has been performing widely in Europe and Korea, including concerts at the Arc de Triomphe and near the Eiffel Tower. The Warner Classics album (out next month) includes Fauré’s song “Après un rêve” (arranged by Kim), two barcarolles, two impromptus, and Chopin’s 12 Etudes and Nocturne No. 8. He will mark the release with recitals in Daegu and Seoul, where his program will feature Schubert and Chopin. Kim studies English literature at Harvard and a piano performance master’s at the New England Conservatory; he cites influences such as Arturo Rubinstein and Radu Lupu. He describes music and literature as linked through storytelling and aims for freedom and imagination in performance.
