Kyochon F&B’s agricultural company Fermentation Workshop 1991 (발효공방1991) was selected as a national attraction in two categories—Gastronomy and Culture/Arts/Tradition—by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Korea Tourism Organization’s ‘Discover Korea 100X100’ project. The project shortlisted sites recommended by 100 travel experts and then held a public vote that gathered about 40,000 participants and 1.53 million votes. Located in Yeongyang, the site restored the 1926 Yeongyang brewery and reopened in 2022, preserving the old wooden structure. It modernizes the production of gamhyangju (감향주), a spoonable makgeolli recipe recorded in the first Korean cookbook “Eumsikdimibang,” and produces premium takju using local Yeongyang rice, including “Milky Way: Starry Night” (12%) and “Milky Way Makgeolli” (6% & 8%). “Milky Way: Starry Night” won the high-alcohol takju grand prize at the Korea Traditional Liquor Competition and was chosen as the official banquet drink for the 2025 APEC ministerial meeting. Fermentation Workshop 1991 has also promoted its products through VIP classes and pop-ups at major department stores to expand consumer access. The operator said the recognition honors both the century-old site and the value of traditional liquor made from local agricultural products and pledged to continue contributing to regional tourism and community growth.
