As the Seollal (Lunar New Year) holiday begins, many in Korea feel mixed emotions about the traditional celebrations. While 32.7% of people look forward to Seollal, others feel burdened by the preparation costs, family obligations, and stress. A survey revealed that 58.4% cited gift and food costs as a major concern, followed by post-holiday fatigue at 43.1%. Modern Korean society, characterized by increasing single-person households and diverse family structures, is challenging traditional practices. Many desire less intrusive questions from relatives and a reduction in elaborate ceremonial foods as part of the celebration. Experts suggest revamping these customs to reduce burden and foster more meaningful family interactions during holidays.
