The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Cheongju, South Korea, is hosting a special exhibition focused solely on watercolors. This exhibition, featuring over 100 works by 34 Korean artists, both celebrates the often underappreciated medium of watercolor and aims to reassess its status in the art world. Unlike oil paints, watercolors in Korea have been seen as a less prestigious or 'amateur' medium, partly due to their prominent use in school art classes. However, this exhibition showcases the unique transparency and subtle effects watercolors can achieve, featuring masterpieces from renowned artists like Lee Jung-seop and Park Su-geun. The exhibition is organized into thematic sections, highlighting different eras and styles, and includes newly unveiled works from the 'Lee Kun-hee Collection'. Significant pieces include Yun Jong-sook’s large mural 'Asan', which demonstrates the immediacy and ephemerality of watercolor. This exhibition offers a fresh perspective on watercolors, celebrating their depth and beauty through both historical and modern lenses.
