National Theater of Korea Launches 2026–2027 Repertory Season in August

The National Theater of Korea revealed its 2026–2027 Repertory Season running from August 21, 2026 to June 27, 2027, featuring 75 productions across 311 days. The season includes 19 world premieres, 12 repertory shows, 14 regular performances, 2 international invitations, 4 domestic invitations, 5 screenings, and 19 co-productions. Themed “Resonance of Tradition Opening a New Era,” the program explores how traditional performing arts intersect with AI and digital change. Highlights include the National Changgeuk Company’s staged adaptations of Oedipus and Chunhyang (a classic Korean love-story opera), repertory staples such as Guito and Lear, and new works from the National Dance Company including a double bill and collaborations with choreographer Heo Yong-sun. The National Gugak Orchestra presents large-scale projects and an outdoor festival returning after three years. Festivals such as the Changgeuk-centered World Music Theater Festival and the 2026 Korean Traditional Dance Festival will return, alongside NT Live screenings, accessible (barrier-free) performances like the courtyard play “Chunpung Cheodo Onda,” youth artist support projects for playwrights, choreographers and composers, and various music and theater works.
