South Korea’s beauty industry is increasingly partnering with character and brand intellectual property (IP) to create limited-edition products that appeal to consumers’ emotions and collector instincts. Brands are using distinctive package designs, exclusive gifts and signature scents to boost recognition and loyalty while attracting fans of the collaborator. Examples include Aekyung’s personal care line Luvscent teaming up with character “Esther Bunny” (a popular character promoting self-love) for a scrub body wash with a French signature fragrance and a free pouch, and house brand Monclos collaborating with Busan sound-shop brand “Balansa” (celebrating its 18th anniversary) on a limited collection featuring PDRN moisturizing sunscreen, hand cream and collectible keyrings. Industry observers say IP collaborations not only offer fresh experiences to existing customers but also draw new fans from partner brands’ followings, and predict more cross-industry tie-ups across beauty, fashion and lifestyle.
