The Faces of Desire: World Masterpieces Explore Human Longing in Hoengseong

Hoengseong Cultural Tourism Foundation opens a special exhibition, “The Faces of Desire,” from July 8–26 at Hoengseong Culture & Arts Center and Hoengseong Complex Art Center. The show presents carefully reproduced replicas of world-famous paintings to examine various human desires and emotions—love and beauty, life and death, survival and anxiety—across time and cultures. Featured works include Gustav Klimt’s Death and Life, Vincent van Gogh’s The Potato Eaters, Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, Edvard Munch’s The Scream, and Henry Fuseli’s The Nightmare (the exhibition’s emblematic image). Replicas faithfully reproduce original color, texture, and size, allowing visitors to view masterpieces that are usually hard to see in one place. On-site docents explain background, symbolism, and artists’ intentions. Lee Jae-seong, the foundation director, says desire is both a core human emotion and a driving force for art, and hopes visitors will discover fresh perspectives and meanings in familiar works.
