Taean on Korea’s west coast blends blue seas and lush forests, offering summer visitors beaches and several notable arboretums and gardens. Chollipo Arboretum (천리포수목원), founded by Korean-American Min Byung-gal, houses over 16,000 plant species including 900 magnolia types and photogenic ponds and rice-plot features. Nearby Mallipo Beach, nicknamed “Mallipifornia,” is a popular surfing spot with evening hours through mid-August. Cheongsan Arboretum features seasonal flower festivals, a maze garden and an alpaca farm; Farm Camomile (팜카밀레) is a large herb garden with aromatic pathways and photo zones. Nature World hosts massive LED light festivals at night with themed zones like the “Love Tunnel” and “Milky Way Path.” Mongdolpo and Mageompo beaches offer quieter camping and tidal-flat activities, while the 52m Yeongmok Port observatory provides panoramic West Sea views. Taean’s new marine healing center offers salt-based therapies and an infinity rooftop pool. Several gardens run hydrangea and lotus festivals through the 26th; admission fees apply at some sites.
