Wagner's Ring Cycle Condensed to 3.9 Hours: A Gateway Concert in Seoul

To mark the 150th anniversary of the full premiere, Wagner’s four-opera Ring Cycle (originally about 15 hours) will be presented as a 235-minute highlights concert in Seoul. The concert—focusing on key scenes, solos and ensembles without staging or sets—lets audiences concentrate on singers and orchestra. Emphasis was placed on preserving Wagner’s leitmotifs (유도동기) so each character remains identifiable even in the abridged format. Top Korean international soloists, including Samuel Yoon (performing Alberich and Hagen), Kim Jae-hyung (Siegfried), Lee Myung-ju (Brünnhilde), Choi In-sik (Wotan) and baritone Kim Ki-hoon, will perform with the Bucheon Philharmonic under conductor Adrien Perruchon. Organizers plan pre/post-performance video and spoken explanations to help audience understanding; artists described the project as an “adventure” and a possible “introduction” (입문서) to Wagner for new listeners. Performances: Aug 8 at Seoul Arts Center and Aug 14 at Bucheon Art Center.
