Samuel Youn Condenses Wagner’s 15-Hour Ring Cycle into 235-Minute Highlights Concert

A highlights concert of Wagner’s four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen, marking the 150th anniversary of its full premiere, will be staged in Korea on August 8 (Seoul) and August 14 (Bucheon). The production compresses the original roughly 15-hour work into 235 minutes, presenting selected major arias, ensembles and pivotal scenes from Das Rheingold (50 min), Die Walküre (50 min), Siegfried (45 min) and Götterdämmerung (60 min). Conductor and bass-baritone Samuel Youn said the project is not a mere cutdown but a careful reworking to preserve narrative flow and musical structure, using chronological editing and keeping key moments so the four parts feel like a single epic. The concert will be performed in a concert-opera format that minimizes staging to focus on voices and orchestra; leitmotifs (recurring musical themes) are emphasized to link characters and events even in the shortened version. Leading Korean and international singers take on major roles, with some artists—like Kim Jae-hyung and Lee Myung-ju—making their first Wagner appearances. Artists warned that some long passages had to be removed and that aficionados might miss those, but they aim to make Wagner more accessible while retaining the work’s depth and dramatic arc.
