The National Asia Culture Center (ACC) is taking its accessibility-themed exhibition “There Is Another Within Our Bodies” on its first overseas tour at the Korean Cultural Center in Shanghai through Sept 5. The participatory exhibition, which brings together disabled and non-disabled artists, opened with Chinese contemporary artists, curators and officials attending. Korean and Chinese disabled artists presented a new performance titled “Starting From Me, Arriving at Others,” developed with local participants. Visitors can actively experience works through their own bodies and senses. The show features media pieces including Um Jung-soon’s “Time of Wrinkles” and “Elephant Without a Trunk” (a work purchased by BTS’s RM), among works by multiple artists exploring accessibility, disability art, and interactive practice. This Shanghai stop is the fourth venue after ACC’s 2023 presentations in Korea, and organizers hope the exchange will foster cross-border understanding of disability as a different life mode rather than a deficit.
